Here are a few moments of the kids working in THEIR garden, completing a craft activity, and engaging in the classroom with their instructor. During my second visit at Hidden Lake Gardens I had the opportunity to observe the Master Gardeners. These are kids ranging from primary school to middle school. The kids had to tend to their garden initially before participating in the classroom. In the classroom the students went through the week's unit in their folders. Led by an instructor, students answered questions, marked such things as the temperature, and discussed insects and their roles in the gardens. The last part of the session included making a firefly, which I thought turned out pretty well.
Aside from observing the students, I got to sit down and discuss the ideas and expectations with the 'boss'- Karen. She gave me a few examples of their competition and what she would like me to put together for Hidden Lake Gardens. I'm am not only going to align field trips, but also design a template to help volunteers be more successful with kids when they visit. I have all ready begun brainstorming the creative design for this project.
